Room for Paradoxes
Friday, November 8
Today’s post is by guest author Heather Johnston. The text is a quote from the 1976 book The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston.
“I learned to make my mind large, as the universe is large, so that there is room for paradoxes.”
I’ve loved this line since I first heard it quoted by the meditation teacher Jack Kornfield nearly 15 years ago. Since then, countless times I have found myself struggling to make sense of something, straining for a coherent storyline or explanation but finding only contradictions. Then I remember that the universe is full of paradoxes, and that I don’t need to make them go away, but rather to make my mind large enough to contain them.
