Today is a guest post from Heather Johnston. The text is the entirety of the poem Advice by Langston Hughes.
Folks, I'm telling you,
birthing is hard
and dying is mean—so get yourself
a little loving
in between.
I think this poem summarizes the human condition about as well as any other description I’ve ever read. In addition to a lucid commentary on life, this poem is a testament to power of a great writer. In nineteen words, Hughes conveys more wisdom than you will find in entire books of philosophy or psychology. Perhaps there’s a metaphor here about quality over quantity. In writing and in anything we do in between birthing and dying, sometimes less is more.
